Born in Toronto, Shelagh Howard has turned her background in Psychology and Fine Art into a thriving photography business. Specializing in portraits, she works with both professional clients and families. Her work has appeared in national magazines, and is in private collections in North America and Europe.
Extensive international travel has given her firsthand exposure to new and varied vistas and cultures. Her experiences lend her photographs a view that is fresh, and yet grounded in traditional ideas and elements.
Her portraits of children and families explore our relationships with each other and document how we communicate and connect. As a mother herself, her rapport with and deep affection for children can be seen in the relaxed way that she relates to her sitters, and how they, in turn, open up to her ideas and her lens.
Shelagh views a photographic sitting as a collaboration, even with the youngest children, and finds that children's own ideas often allow them to show more of themselves than if they were simply directed. Her perceptive eye and passionate heart combine to produce photogaphs that are both art objects and treasured portraits.
